Specials at St. John the Baptist
St. John's offers a robust curriculum that not only focuses on excellence in English, math, social studies and science, but also creates a well-rounded student, by offering the following "specials" throughout the week for all grade levels from preschool to 8th grade.
Religion
Religion is part of every class at St. John the Baptist, but we also have a dedicated religion class that delves into different subjects throughout the year. Students learn through stories, activities, Scripture, prayer, discussion, and reflection about their faith and values. Goals are to:
- Understand and communicate the teachings of the Catechism of the Catholic Church
- Participate in Mass and the sacraments
- Experience and appreciate a variety of prayer forms
- Engage in service projects
- Read and comprehend texts relevant to doctrine and teachings
Spanish
St. John's has a goal of teaching Spanish in the four basic communication skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Ultimately, our goal is to be able to hold conversations and be well versed in writing in Spanish. In the classroom, we strive to interact in Spanish as much as possible, building skills every year. Students from preschool through 8th grade have Spanish as part of their curriculum.
Technology
Our technology program at St. John the Baptist is built on the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) standards. It is based on the following principles:
- Be an empowered learner of technology
- Understand being a responsible digital citizen
- Use a variety of resources for gaining information
- Be imaginative using digital sources to create useful solutions
- Use appropriate tools to communicate clearly, creatively and effectively
- Be able to connect globally and learn about other cultures
From preschool through 8th grade, our curriculum builds from one year to the next. Starting with basic logins, we move to word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, internet research and many other skills as the years progress.
Physical Education
St. John's has a terrific physical education program! We focus on the basics - movement, physical fitness, team building, health and wellness, the human body system and decision making. And, we have a lot of fun! Some of our varied physical education units include roller skating, fishing, volleyball and basketball. All students from preschool through 8th grade participate in physical education.

Music
We love to sing and dance! Our music curriculum starts in preschool with basic songs and movement and progresses to understanding rhythm, tone, tempo, melodies and harmonies and melodic movement throughout your child's time at our school. Students in 2nd – 8th grade also have the opportunity to participate in the Children’s Choir at Mass.
Art
Art is all around us at St. John's. Preschool through 8th grade students attend art class where we utilize a large variety of mediums to construct visual projects to convey our thoughts and creativity with others. Painting, drawing, sculpting, textures, shapes, nature, abstract, religious - we have it all!
